Have you ever wondered why tinctures are preferred for some uses and teas or infusions for others? What types of compounds are best isolated in vinegars? Why is it necessary to prepare some herbal medicines fresh? This workshop will introduce some fundamental chemical concepts that can help address these and other questions herbalists may ask. Topics covered will include chemical structure and polarity, solubility, acid-base chemistry, oxidation-reduction, hydrolysis, enzymes, and functional groups, and will be presented in the context of herbal applications.
